On January 3, 1938, Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes, in response to widespread polio outbreaks in the United States. Roosevelt himself had been diagnosed with the disease in 1921. The organization brought together scientists and volunteers, with volunteers raising funds to support research and public education efforts. In honor of Franklin D. Roosevelt founding the organization, a redesign of the dime with his portrait on the obverse was chosen to posthumously honor him. The Roosevelt dime was issued in 1946, on what would have been his 64th birthday.
