The U.S. Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth in 1909. A limited quantity of 1909 cents have the designer's initials (V.D.B.) on the reverse. In 1918, the initials returned to the cent, only this time to the obverse between Lincoln's shoulder and the rim. This was the first U.S. cent to have the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto.
