In 1891, Mint Director Edward O. Leech instructed the United States Bureau of the Mint Chief Engraver, Charles E. Barber, to create new designs for the dime, quarter, and half dollar. In November 1891, after some changes were made to secure Leech's endorsement, President Benjamin Harrison approved Barber's designs. The official striking of the coins began in January of 1892. Barber Quarters were minted from 1892 to 1916.
