In 1835, Mint Director R. M. Patterson sought after new coin designs, looking to move away from traditional bust portraits towards a style similar to that of contemporary British copper coins. Engraver William Kneass created the first sketches but was unable to finish the project after suffering a stroke. Artists Thomas Sully and Titian Peale completed the drawing of the design, with Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht engraved the design. Seated Liberty Half Dimes were minted from 1837 to 1891.
